Exhibition Opening at the Pickens County Museum June 17, 2006


 

"Thirty Years: the Pickens County Museum Art Collection," the next
exhibition at the Pickens County Museum of Art & History, opens June 17
and continues through August 26, 2006. 

 

The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, June 17, from
7:00 until 9:00 p.m. 


The exhibition features the creative talent of some of the South
Carolina's finest artists, with a concentration on the Carolina
Upcountry. Consisting of works selected from past Foothills Festivals,
Annual Juried Art Exhibitions and thirty years of changing exhibitions,
the collection reflects upon the museum's directors, curators and
jurors, past and present. 

 

Works in the collection date from the mid- 20th Century to 2006 works
purchased from the most recent juried exhibition. They represent a
diverse cross section of South Carolina artists and artisans working in
a variety of medium and styles. 

 

This exhibition includes new acquisitions as well as numerous works not
exhibited since their initial presentation in previous museum shows.

 

"Thirty Years is not just an art exhibition, it is also a unique
opportunity for our entire Upcountry community," said museum director,
Allen Coleman. "Rarely do we have the chance to experience a large scale
presentation celebrating the strengths of our museum's permanent
collection. Local collections such as this well represent the cultural
endeavors of our regional artisans and certainly help to fulfill this
museum's mission."


"Thirty Years" will be on display in the museum's Sealevel, G1 and Focus
Galleries. The Pickens County Museum of Art & History is funded in part
by a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives
support from the National Endowment for the Arts. 


The Pickens County Museum, opened in 1975, is home to the Pickens County
Heritage collection of artifacts and the Pickens County Museum Art
Collection of fine, folk, traditional and decorative works. 

 

Located at the corner of Hwy. 178 at 307 Johnson Street in Pickens SC,
the museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until
5:00 p.m., Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from
9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcomed.
