Local Native American history
to be discussed at Pickens County Museum forum
"Native America 101" is the topic for the Pickens County Museum's
monthly Third Thursday Forum to be held in the museum's LaVonne Nalley
Piper Auditorium on November 16 starting at 6 p.m.
Ed Bolt, site manager at Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center
in Pickens SC, will present an overview of the time periods, tools and
weapons associated with American Indian prehistory in this area, a
summary of Cherokee beliefs and a report on the South Carolina Rock Art
Interpretive Center planned for the Hagood Mill site.
Upon its completion, the Rock Art Interpretive Center will protect
and preserve numerous pre-historic rock carvings, or petroglyphs,
discovered at the site and will provide information on the numerous
petroglyph and pictogram sites discovered during the SC Rock Art Survey
conducted by the SC Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology.
A graduate of Easley High School, North Greenville Jr. College and
Greenville Technical College, Bolt previously served as curator at the
Pickens County Museum. He was a co-founder of the Foothills Museum of
the American Indian which was located in Easley until 1996, served on
the Native American Task Force of the SC National Heritage Corridor and
has been a member of the Central States Archaeology Society since 1986.
"Native America 101," part of the museum's monthly Thursday Forums
designed to provide interesting and educational programming for the
community, is a prelude to the Native American Festival set for
Saturday, November 18 at Hagood Mill.
The Pickens County Museum of Art & History is located in Pickens at
the intersection of Highway 178 and Johnson Street (307 Johnson Street)
across from Pickens City Hall.
