"Old Time Fiddlin' Convention"
THIS Saturday September 16 at the Hagood Mill
The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites you to a special, and free, day of milling, music and memories at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. The Mill will be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This 1845 gristmill, with its' 20 ft. overshot wooden waterwheel, is one of the oldest mills still producing grain products in S.C.
Join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as "Music in the Mountains 2006" continues with the Hagood Mill playing host for a free, old-time "Fiddlin' Convention" on the outdoor Cabin Stage from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This "mountain music showdown" will feature competitions and prize money for old time fiddle, junior fiddle, old time banjo, guitar, old time string band and an "open" category (mandolin, dulcimer, harmonica, etc.). This promises to be a foot-stomping-good-old-time! Hagood Mill does record the "3rd Saturday" music for the archives of the Pickens County Museum of Art & History. Remember to bring your lawn chair, so you can sit back and enjoy the day!
Hagood Mill operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.
Members of the Upcountry Quilters Guild will continue their work on a very special quilt to be raffled the third Saturday in October to sponsor folklife programming at the mill site. The pattern, "Goose in the Pond" is a bed size quilt with 81 pieces per block, made of reproduction Civil War era fabrics. Raffle tickets will be available from the quilters at the mill.
The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, moonshining, quilting, spinning, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking and more! Also enjoy the opportunity to see the progress made on the restoration of the complete 19th Century cotton ginning operation, including gin, in-feed, compactor and baler. When restoration is complete, the gin will become part of the Mill's regular attractions and will certainly bring back memories of the days when cotton was king and the southern textile industry was just beginning.
There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! So, head on out, grab a plate of Kannarney's Barbeque and enjoy a day at the Mill. Show your support for the Mill and the Pickens County Museum by joining them at this monthly 3rd Saturday event. The Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just 3 miles north of Pickens or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 off SC Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Hagood Mill is now open Wednesday Through Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00, to tour the buildings and grounds and to pick up those "mill products." Additional folklife and music programming has begun on the "Other Saturdays." Watch for scheduling.
"Music in the Mountains 2006" is sponsored by a private benefactor and a donation from the Duke Power Company.
