The Appalachian Railroad is topic for
Third Thursday program at Pickens County Museum

The old Appalachian Railroad (1898-1964) will be the topic for the
September 21 Third Thursday Forum at the Pickens County Museum of Art &
History in Pickens. The program, free to the public, will take place in
the LaVonne Nalley Piper Auditorium beginning at 6 p.m.

Pickens native Alan Warner, local historian and miller/millwright at
Hagood Mill, has walked much of the route of the logging railroad that
once ran through well known sites like Easley, Eastatoee and the Horse
Pasture.

"During one of my several exploring adventures in the Estatoee Valley
I came across some old railroad cross ties. I frequently drove across
them and became interested in where the railroad route led," Warner
said.

During the last year he has walked the railroad route from the
Appalachian Lumber Mill site into the Horse Pasture area of Pickens
County, documenting and mapping that portion. He has enlisted friends
Meg and Tom Benko to help in his search for the rest of the route.

In addition to this interest in the old railroad, Warner, an employee
of Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative and active with the Pickens County
Cultural Commission, has spent 10 years documenting the water mills and
mill sites in Pickens and Oconee counties.

He will share his experiences in a power point presentation and short
video and also will have maps and other items on display.

This program is part of the Pickens County Museum's continuing effort
to provide a variety of interesting and educational programming for the
community. The museum is located at 307 Johnson Street in Pickens, at
the intersection of Johnson Street and Highway 178.
