Write from the Front Website and Traveling Exhibit Feature Stories of SC
Service Members

Columbia, S.C.-Emails and photos sent home by South Carolina service
members in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere are being featured on a new
website and traveling exhibit created by the SC Confederate Relic Room
and Military Museum.

At the start of the Iraq war in 2003, the museum launched the Write from
the Front program in an effort to collect and preserve emails, digital
photos, and other items from South Carolina service members that reflect
their thoughts and daily experiences while on duty defending our nation.
The program recognizes that electronic communication has begun to
replace traditional paper letters as the preferred way for many service
members to write home. While the immediacy of email is convenient, this
form of correspondence can also be lost forever with a single click of
the delete button

"We are still actively seeking South Carolina service members and
families who would like to ensure that their war correspondence and
other material are saved for the next generation," said Museum Director
Allen Roberson. "The emails are the building blocks of tomorrow's
history books and research. We don't want these real-world stories to be
lost with the next hard drive crash."

The website, www.wftf.sc.gov, features materials voluntarily submitted
by soldiers, aviators and sailors who are South Carolina natives or were
trained at one of the state's many military bases. Containing email
collections, photo galleries, a blog, "Stories from the Front," event
information, and much more, the website allows greater access to the
Write from the Front archives and an understanding of South Carolina's
service members and their role in the current conflict.

The new Write from the Front traveling exhibit includes highlights from
the collection and information on how service members and their families
can contribute to the program. The exhibit also comes equipped with
desktop computers that allow visitors to browse the online Write from
the Front collection. It is free to local libraries, museums, and other
institutions. Organizations interested in hosting the Write from the
Front exhibit should contact Sarah Wooton, the Chief Curator of
Collections and Exhibitions, at 803-737-8094 or by email at
swooton at crr.sc.gov.

The South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum is the
