Spring Basketry Series at the Pickens County Museum
Lecture, display and workshops to be featured on April 19 and May 5
Baskets Around the World, is a free program presented by
award-winning basket maker Pati English. Join us on Thursday, April
19th, 6-7pm at the Pickens County Museum. Pati will further highlight
her Baskets Around the World presentation with more than 100 lovely
examples of these exotic works of art from her own collection.
Want to learn how to make your own basket? Come to Pati's workshop on
May 5th. You can register for the workshop the evening you attend the
Baskets Around the World presentation or by contacting the museum.
Pati English will conduct two workshops in basket weaving Saturday,
May 5, 2007, at the Pickens County Museum of Art & History, 307 Johnson
St, Pickens.
"These skills employed by our ancestors have nearly been forgotten,"
said Ms. English, a resident artist and instructor for the S. C. Arts
Commission. "This is the impetus for us to keep the art of basketry
alive."
Basket weaving involves a variety of skills with techniques geared
toward Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced weaving levels. Participants
in the workshops (16 years & up) will choose the shape of their basket,
select, measure and cut materials, then weave with natural and dyed
materials in many color choices.
A four-hour session is scheduled May 5th, from 9 am to 1 pm.
Participants in this session will choose to make either a round basket,
pair of jelly jar baskets, or napkin/CD or tissue box basket. Cost for
this workshop is $49.
A six-hour session will be held on the same day, from 9 am to 4 pm.
Participants will choose to make either a gathering basket, an oval
tote-berry pickin' basket, Williamsburg basket or a wool and floor
storage basket. Cost for this workshop is $59.
All basket making materials and printed instructions with color
photographs are included in the registration fee.
All workshop participants must be pre-registered and pre-paid in
order that sufficient materials can be provided. Space is limited.
Deadline for workshop registration is Friday, April 26, 2007.
Registration forms are available at the Pickens County Museum, located
on the corner of Highway 178 and Johnson Street in Pickens.
This program is part of the Pickens County Museum's continuing effort
to provide a variety of entertaining and educational programming for the
community and is funded in part by donations from Carroll M. Wilson and
Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. The museum, located at the
intersection of Highway 178 at 307 Johnson Street in Pickens, is open
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday from 9
a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-.4:30 p.m..
