A Day of "Deep Winter Blues"
at the Hagood Mill
The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites you to a special, and free, day of milling, music and memories at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. The Mill will be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, February 17th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This 1845 gristmill, with its' 20 ft. overshot wooden waterwheel, is one of the oldest mills still producing grain products in S.C.
Got those winter blues? Are you ready for spring? Come join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as "Music in the Mountains 2007" continues to get rolling with the Hagood Mill playing host for a free, "Deep Winter Blues" concert and program in the Visitor Center from 12:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Hosted again this year by SC Folk Heritage Award winning guitarist, Steve McGaha, this program will feature Steve along with some of his very talented friends: Freddie Vanderford on harmonica; Greg Barfield on washboard; Danny Henderson and his Piedmont Blues style guitar; Dean Watson on banjo and multi-instrumentalist, Bob Buckingham along with his band, Blind Lemon Pledge and the Blues Dusters. Don't miss this wonderful program of folk and traditional blues music presented by some of the area's great pickers! Hagood Mill does record the "3rd Saturday" music for the archives of the Pickens County Museum of Art & History.
There will be a free slide guitar workshop (Getting started in "Open D"), when the concert is over at 3:00, so bring out that guitar (tuned DADF#AD) with a slide and get started playing! One and all are also invited to join in the jam(s) at the site.
Hagood Mill operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.
On the outdoor stage will be set up the "Crawford Collection" of local Native American stone artifacts. Barry and Billy Crawford will be present to talk about their collection and to identify any artifacts that visitors wish to bring.
In addition, John Owen of Carolina Carvers will be present demonstrating his considerable skill with a chainsaw carving a bear. He will have a variety of his 'saw sculptures' with him and will be available to talk about his craft.
The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, moonshining, quilting, spinning, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, musical instrument building and more! Also enjoy the opportunity to see the progress made on the restoration of the complete 19th Century cotton ginning operation, including gin, in-feed, compactor and baler. When restoration is complete, the gin will become part of the Mill's regular attractions and will certainly bring back memories of the days when cotton was king and the southern textile industry was just beginning.
There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! So, head on out, grab a hotdog or a plate of Kannarney's Barbeque and enjoy a day at the Mill. Show your support for the Mill and the Pickens County Museum by joining them at this monthly 3rd Saturday event. The Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just 3 miles north of Pickens or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 off SC Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Hagood Mill is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00, to tour the buildings and grounds or to purchase mill related products. Additional folklife and music programming has begun on the "Other Saturdays." Watch for scheduling.
"Music in the Mountains 2007" is sponsored by an "anonymous" benefactor and a donation from the Duke Power Company.
