Lee's General Order #9 and Flag Display Opening January 19, 2006
Columbia, S.C.-In April 1865, General Robert E. Lee delivered his
farewell address, known as General Order #9, to the Army of Northern
Virginia. Twelve official copies of the document circulated throughout
the army, while clerks present at the surrender at Appomattox
transcribed a few souvenir copies.
To commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of Lee's birthday, the SC
Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum opens "General Order #9:
Lee's Farewell to His Troops" on January 19, 2007. This display
features a rare copy of the order inscribed by Lee to William Henry
Heywood Atkinson, an Army of Northern Virginia clerk. Atkinson, a South
Carolina native, presented his personal copy to the Beech Island
Agricultural Society following the war. General Order #9 is on loan
from the Beech Island Agricultural Society, one of South Carolina's
oldest societies. Founded in 1846 to share and promote agricultural
knowledge, the organization continues to hold regular meetings and
barbecues today.
This exhibit also provides a unique opportunity to view to the 12th
South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment battle flag, on display for
the first time since it was conserved in 1999.
Founded in 1896, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military
Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area and is an agency of the
South Carolina Budget and Control Board, accredited by the American
Association of Museums. For more information please contact Jai Cassidy
