"Ringing in the New Year with Old Time Music" at Hagood Mill

Three-two-one...Happy New Year! The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites you to a special, and free, day of milling, music and memories at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center. The Mill will be operating, rain or shine, on Saturday, January 20th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This 1845 gristmill, with its' 20 ft. overshot wooden waterwheel, is one of the oldest mills still producing grain products in S.C.

Some of the old time mountain musicians had a tradition of "Breaking Up Christmas," where, for the twelve days of Christmas, they would go from house to house, clear out a room, and have a stomping good time every evening. In that same spirit of Breaking Up Christmas, join the friends of the Pickens County Museum as "Music in the Mountains 2007" kicks off with the Hagood Mill playing host for a free, "Ringing in the New Year with Old Time Music" in the Visitor Building from 12:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Hosted again this year by musician, Bob Buckingham, this rousing program will feature Bob and his band, the Blue Ridge Rounders, along with some of their hot-picker friends, Anderson's own Electric City Hillbillies and a great duo, the Pea Ridge Ramblers. Don't miss this wonderful program of old time string band music presented by some of its' best proponents in the region! Hagood Mill does record the "3rd Saturday" music for the archives of the Pickens County Museum of Art & History.

The musicians will host a free fiddle workshop and banjo workshop, beginning at 11:00, so bring out that instrument and get started (or get an extra boost) down that road to being a musician. One and all are also invited to join in the jam(s) at the site.

Hagood Mill operates just as it has for the last century-and-a-half. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground corn meal, grits and wheat flour will be available, as well as Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill related items.

On the outdoor stage will be set up the "Crawford Collection" of local Native American stone artifacts. Barry and Billy Crawford will be present to talk about their collection and to identify any artifacts that visitors wish to bring.

The Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional arts demonstrations each month, including blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flintknapping, moonshining, quilting, spinning, weaving, woodcarving, open-hearth cooking, musical instrument building and more! Also enjoy the opportunity to see the progress made on the restoration of the complete 19th Century cotton ginning operation, including gin, in-feed, compactor and baler. When restoration is complete, the gin will become part of the Mill's regular attractions and will certainly bring back memories of the days when cotton was king and the southern textile industry was just beginning.

There promises to be lots to do and lots of fun! So, head on out, grab a hotdog or a plate of Kannarney's Barbeque and enjoy a day at the Mill. Show your support for the Mill and the Pickens County Museum by joining them at this monthly 3rd Saturday event. The Hagood Mill operates, rain or shine, the third Saturday of every month and is located just 3 miles north of Pickens or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 off SC Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road. Hagood Mill is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00, to tour the buildings and grounds or to purchase mill related products. Additional folklife and music programming has begun on the "Other Saturdays." Watch for scheduling.

"Music in the Mountains 2007" is sponsored by an anonymous benefactor and a gift from the Duke Power Company.
