J.C. Owens and George Roberson at Hagood Mill

"First Saturday" performances slated for July 7 at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center

The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites one and all for a free house concert at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center on Saturday, July 7. At 12:00, SC Folk Heritage Award winning fiddler, J.C. Owens, will perform in the Visitor Building. Owens is a master of the instrument and will perform a variety of fiddling styles. At 1:00, singer / songwriter and storyteller George Roberson will perform a concert of his music.

Each "First Saturday" also sees luthier, Harold Wayne Turner present, constructing a dulcimer or other instrument and available to answer any questions about musical instrument construction. The Mill Site keeps free catalogs of tools and instrument kits for those interested. One and all are also invited to bring that stringed instrument out and jam!

The Pickens County Beekeepers will be on site with an observation hive, "Honey Bee" trading cards (both designed for kids) and directions on how to make all natural candles using bees wax.

Come out and enjoy the music and also some great "goodies," as the folks from "Yoders" will have a table of baked goods and treats!

The Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center hosts a free mini-festival of traditional arts, folklife and music the third Saturday of every month and is now offering these free additional "First Saturday" workshops as an extension of the programming of the Pickens County Museum of Art & History. The Mill Site is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 until 4:00, to tour the buildings and grounds and to visit the Mill Site Gift Shop. Hagood Mill is located just 3 miles north of Pickens or 5 ½ miles south of Cherokee Foothills Scenic Hwy 11 off SC Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood Mill Road.
