FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Confederate Memorial Day Cemetery Tours
On May 5, 2007, the SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum and
Elmwood Cemetery are partnering to offer Confederate Memorial Day
Cemetery Tours. Curators from the museum will lead tours of the
cemetery that concentrate on Confederate and military burials.
Participants will learn about many of the Confederate soldiers buried in
the cemetery, including native South Carolinian General Maxcy Gregg, the
members of the 8th United States Infantry who occupied Columbia during
Reconstruction, the graves of Spanish-American and World War I soldiers,
and the important role of women in establishing Memorial Day services
at the cemetery.
Tours, approximately 45-minutes each, are scheduled for 1:00, 1:30,
2:00, and 2:30. Tours are free of charge but donations to the museum's
Flag Conservation Fund will be accepted. To make reservations, contact
the museum at (803) 737-8095.
Founded in 1896, the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military
Museum is the oldest museum in the Columbia area and is an agency of the
South Carolina Budget and Control Board, accredited by the American
Association of Museums. The museum focuses on South Carolina's military
history from the Revolutionary War to the present War on Terror.
Elmwood Cemetery was established in 1854 and received its first
interment in 1856. The historic cemetery currently contains
approximately 25,000 graves in 125 acres and is still an active
facility. For more information about Elmwood Cemetery contact Susie
Baier at (803) 252-2133.
