I just wanted to forward this message concerning an important meeting
taking place tomorrow in Columbia. The House Education Committee will
review Jim Rex's proposal to reform the state's accountability system.
This new proposal, as it currently stands, will effectively remove
Social Studies from any sort of statewide accountability. It is a
well-known fear that if Social Studies is not tested, it will not be
taught, especially at the elementary level. If you are able to attend
this meeting tomorrow, please do so and show your support for history
and social studies education in South Carolina.
Please contact Mary Paige Boyce of Richland 2 at the number below if
you
plan to attend or if you have questions.

Subject: tomorrow
Blatt Building (on Capitol grounds) 10:00 - House Education Committee
Hearing on Dr. Rex's proposal. This is our first opportunity to
publicly oppose the elimination of social studies from the
accountability program. I will have the "Save Social Studies" buttons
and stickers representing your geographic area - so let me know if you
are coming. We REALLY need someone from Spartanburg as the chair of
the
House Education Committee is from Spartanburg!! You cannot be late -
plan to get there around 9:30.

The date of the first public hearing of the K-12 House Committee on
Education is September 6th. 10:00 A.M. in the Blatt Building. Be
prepared to stay all day because the meeting will encompass the whole
proposal and we don't know when the part that eliminates social
studies
will come up or how they will have organized the speaking times. We
will all wear buttons - I will get these made - but only one of us
will
speak and it must be brief. The most important thing is - be there for
social studies. I met with Representative Walker's Research Director
today and she knows we are gearing up - that is a good thing because
last year we were the "johnny come latelys!" Now, we must have numbers
at this meeting. If you can't come - get your mother! And don't forget
your friends and family when recruiting people to e-mail their
legislators.
Let me know for sure when you know if you can come so I will know how
many buttons to get.
