"Blue Dawg String Band" and "Owens & Barfield"
in house concert at Hagood Mill
The Pickens County Cultural Commission invites one and all for a
free house concert at the Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center
Saturday, April 5. From 12:30 to 2:30 in the Visitor Building, the mill
site is proud to host a concert by the Blue Dawg String Band, a tight
old-time group consisting of veteran regional performers (and couples),
Barb & Don Massey, Lucy Allen & Marshall Goers and Jodi & Pete Dodd.
This fine group of musicians brings together a diverse array of talent
and is sure to offer a foot-stomping good time. Opening at 11:45 will be
popular Hagood Mill "regulars", fiddler J.C. Owens and Gregg "Buffalo"
Barfield. At 2:30, there will be an open jam. Seating is limited and
first come - first served. CD's of Owens and some of the other
performers are available in the gift shop.
Each "First Saturday" also sees luthier, Harold Wayne Turner
present, constructing a dulcimer or other instrument and available to
answer any questions about musical instrument construction. The Mill
Site keeps free catalogs of tools and instrument kits for those
interested. One and all are also invited to bring that stringed
instrument out and jam!
The "spinning" ladies from Fiber Friends will be in the Hagood
Cabin during the afternoon to demonstrate their craft and to introduce
anyone interested to the art of spinning.
Come out and enjoy the music and also some great "goodies," as the
folks from "Yoders" will have a table of baked goods and treats!
The Pickens County Museum of Art & History along with the Hagood
Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center are funded in part by Pickens
County, members and friends of the museum and a grant from the South
Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National
Endowment for the Arts.
The Mill Site is open Wed. through Sat. from 10:00 to 4:00, to tour
the buildings and grounds. Hagood Mill is located three miles north of
Pickens or five miles south of Hwy 11, just off Hwy 178 at 138 Hagood
Mill Road. For more information contact Hagood Mill at 864-898-2936 or
the Pickens County Museum at 864-898-5963.
