Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Governor Mark Sanford has proclaimed May 18, 2008 as Museum Day in the Palmetto State. I apologize for the late notification. The proclamation was signed into effect later than anticipated. I have yet to receive the actual proclamation on paper. However, what is most important is that the Governor has again shown his support for our wonderful cultural heritage.

I encourage all of you to show your support of Museum Day. In the past every museum and cultural organization in the state has been asked to offer their visitors free or discounted admission, and any programming you have developed for such occasions.

Museum Day is a national and international event that has been celebrated all over the world since 1977. I have provided you with a link to the ICOM webpage for your reference: http://icom.museum/imd.html. The event provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them to the challenges that museums face as institutions in the service of society and of its development. Each year, a theme is decided on by the ICOM Advisory Committee, and this year’s theme is "Museums as agents of social change and development."

Thank you again for your interest in Museum Day.

Jason Shaiman
SCFM 2nd Vice President
