FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum Recognized by South
Carolina Federation of Museums

Columbia, S.C.— The South Carolina
Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum received an Award of Achievement
from the South Carolina Federation of Museums during the federation’s
annual convention held March 10 through the 12, 2010.

One of only three award recipients, The South
Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum was recognized for the
U.S.S. Columbia Commemoration Project which included a new interactive,
permanent exhibit featuring a large scale model of the cruiser, a published
booklet, a reunion of ship’s remaining veterans, and a declaration of
October 15, 2009 as USS Columbia Day by the State Senate.

Named after the capital city of South
Carolina the U.S.S. Columbia participated in the largest naval battle in
history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation and
ten battle stars for its World War II service. The museum refurbished the
model of the light cruiser that was built in 1986 by a crew member and has
proven extremely popular with the museum’s patrons.

Allen Roberson, museum Executive Director,
says that the award is evidence that the Confederate Relic Room and Military
Museum continues to make an impact. “At last count, there are 255 museums
listed by the SC Federation of Museums and only three of these awards were
given out this year, the fact that this project was one of the three recognized
shows that we are being successful in our mission to celebrate South
Carolina’s military history.”
